FAQ

"Where sheep wool’s warmth meets equine care ."

💛 At Woolcare, we believe horses heal best when supported by natural materials that work with the body, not against it. Our Nordic sheep’s wool is carded but otherwise untreated, allowing it to retain its natural structure and lanolin. Rather than acting as a medical treatment, wool creates a breathable, protective environment where the skin can rest, regulate, and begin to recover naturally.

FAQ 1: How can wool help with mud fever, skin irritation, or swollen legs?

Many people expect healing to come from something applied onto the skin — a cream, a spray, a medication. Wool works differently.

Untreated wool creates a soft, supportive layer around the leg. It reduces friction, cushions sensitive areas, and protects the skin from constant exposure to moisture, dirt, and movement.

Because our wool still contains natural lanolin, it helps prevent the skin from becoming overly dry or irritated. For many horses, this is the first time the skin is simply left alone — protected, not rubbed, not sealed in.

That’s why many customers tell us they notice a visible difference after the first use.

Wool doesn’t force change. It allows recovery to begin.

FAQ 2: What is lanolin, and why does it matter?

Lanolin is the natural fat found in sheep’s wool. It’s there to protect the sheep from cold, wind, and moisture — and it plays a similar role when used for horses.

Most wool products on the market are heavily washed and processed, removing lanolin completely. Our wool is different. It is left untreated, so the lanolin remains.

Lanolin helps prevent the skin from drying out

  • Lanolin helps prevent the skin from drying out

  • It makes the wool feel gentler and more skin-friendly

  • Untreated wool with lanolin is a key reason many customers notice results very quickly

Lanolin isn’t added. It’s simply left where nature put it.

FAQ 3: Is it safe to use wool on broken skin or sensitive areas?

Wool has been used for centuries as a skin-friendly material, but it’s important to use it thoughtfully.

If the skin is broken, keep the area clean and observe it carefully. For very sensitive horses, start with shorter sessions and increase gradually.

Wool should never replace veterinary care. If you notice signs of infection, strong heat, or worsening swelling, always contact your veterinarian.

Think of wool as support, not a cure — something that helps the skin rest while healing is already happening.

FAQ 4: Will wool make the leg too warm?

This is one of the most common worries — and one of the biggest misunderstandings.

Warmth itself isn’t the problem.
Trapped heat and moisture are.

Wool is naturally breathable and moisture-regulating. It allows air to circulate and helps manage moisture instead of sealing it in like plastic or neoprene.

Many horses actually feel more comfortable in wool because the leg stays balanced — not cold, not overheated.

If your horse runs warm, start with shorter wear times and check the leg regularly.

FAQ 5: Which product should I choose: Wool Pads, Pastern Wraps, or Short Stable Boots?

Here’s a simple guide:

  • Wool Pads (VILLage™)
Best for general leg support, swelling, tendon and joint comfort, and stable use.

  • Pastern Wraps (Wooler™)
Best for targeted protection of the pastern area, especially for mud fever or skin irritation.

  • Short Stable Boots (Wooler™)
Best if you want an easy, all-in-one stable boot with the benefits of wool.

If you’re unsure, start with the area you want to support most.

FAQ 6: What size should I choose for my horse, pony, or foal?

Comfort matters.

A well-fitted wool product should feel secure without pressure or tightness.

  • Follow the size guide on the product page

  • Measure carefully as instructed

  • If between sizes, choose the size that allows a snug but relaxed fit

If you’re unsure, we’re happy to help — just tell us your horse’s height, breed, and measurements.

FAQ 7: How do I use the product for best results?

Wool works best when it’s allowed to do what it does naturally.

  1. Clean and dry the area

  2. Place the wool smoothly, without folds or pressure points

  3. Use during stable or rest periods

  4. Check after the first use to confirm comfort

Consistency creates the best environment for recovery.

FAQ 8: How fast will I see results?

Every horse is different.

Some show visible improvement after the first use — something we hear often from customers. Others need steady, consistent use over days or weeks.

Wool supports the process, but it doesn’t rush it. If symptoms worsen or don’t improve, veterinary advice is always the right next step.

FAQ 9: How often do I need to reorder?

The natural lanolin effect typically lasts around two months with regular use.

  • Many customers reorder about every 2 months

  • Reorder timing depends on usage frequency and number of legs treated

  • Daily use or multiple horses may require earlier reordering

You’ll usually notice when the wool feels drier and that’s a good indicator it’s time to replace it.

FAQ 10: How do I clean and care for the wool products?

Proper care helps extend the life of your wool products.

  • Shake or brush off dirt after use

  • Let the wool air out between sessions

  • Wash only when necessary to preserve lanolin

  • Always follow the care instructions on the product label

  • Fully dry before reuse

With proper care, wool stays fresh, comfortable, and effective.
